"we provide a hand up, not a hand out"
Open
Door Mission Vision Statement
The Open Door Mission is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated
to the elimination of homelessness in the Rutland area by providing
a safe and healthy place in which those on need may find shelter,
comfort and a helping hand as they work to improve their status
in the community; and do this with respect and dignity for all.
What is the Mission?
The Open Door Mission
was established in 1965 at the old Pine Street School in Rutland.
Since 1987, the Mission has been located in the old Park Street
School at 31 Park St in Rutland. The Mission consists of four main
components: the David Dean Veteran Shelter, the John Cassarino Overnight
Shelter, the Soup Kitchen and the Mission Thrift Store.
The Open Door Mission is dedicated to providing meals and shelter
to those of need. The Mission is a place
where the less fortunate in the community may get a hot meal and
a warm bed365 days a year. In the past year, the Mission provided
over 32,000 meals and 13,000 bed nights to the disenfranchised of
Vermont, among whom, 40% are veterans who served their country so
all could enjoy the fruits of their valor.
The Mission is primarily
financed by the generosity of individuals through its yearly appeal,
the proceeds of the Thrift Shop and its charity golf tournament.
The Mission's funding does not go on the
ballot at election time. The mission strives to operate as a self-sufficient,
independent shelter.
